The Vineyard and Winemaking – Our estate vineyard is located on a special parcel in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. The vineyard borders Dry Creek at the base of the Mayacamas Mountain range and is located in the largest of 10 alluvial fan belts in Napa Valley. The well-drained sandy and gravelly loam soils, in partnership with moderate temperatures, yield concentrated fruit with great flavor intensity, yet a supple mouth-feel. The vineyard is planted to three different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Each block was hand-harvested into small boxes at daybreak and carefully sorted. Our winemaker allowed four days of cold soak, for a gentle extraction of color and flavor, followed by a warm fermentation. Several weeks of extended maceration increased flavor intensity and rounded the tannins. The wine is aged in an assortment of French oak barrels that are chosen to complement the subtle nuances of the vineyard. The selection of these barrels further enhances the length, depth and complexity of this varietal and reveals a well-integrated wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for later enjoyment.
Tasting - The deep aromas and dark garnet color reveal layer upon layer saturated with black cherry, wild berries, cassis and hints of grandfather’s cigar box and vanilla. The lush, concentrated flavors of mission fig, dried cherry and ripe black currant echo the aromas, framed by plush tannins, rich, creamy mouthfeel and a persistent chocolate finish.
